Alfie Meadows was one of a number of students injured by police during the mass demonstration outside parliament against MPs voting through 9000 tuition fees. In Alfie’s case he had to undergo emergency brain surgery to save his life after being hit over the head by a police baton. Jody McIntyre was also dragged out of his wheel chair and hit.
A Doctor present on the demonstration set up a field hospital in parliament square as thousands were kettled. The 34 year old doctor was later kettled on Westminster Bridge and recorded symptoms of severe crushing including respiratory problems and chest pains.
These scenes formed part of a wider pattern of attacks on students protesting in defence of education. Mass arrests followed and significant numbers of young have since people torn away from their families and friends to be jailed for up to 36 months. This includes Zenon Mitchell, a Sussex University student, who is in prison for 15 months after being filmed throwing one placard stick on the 10th November education demonstration.
It is absolutely paramount that we do not leave Alfie Meadows to a similar fate. He has since been charged with violent disorder -a charge which carries a sentence of up to 5 years and goes to trial on 26th March.
Alfie first became involved in campaigning during an occupation to save his philosophy department at Middlesex University. After it was closed and moved to another university, he then took part in the demonstrations against increasing fees – and nearly lost his life.
We are asking lecturers to support the Justice for Alfie Meadows Campaign in the lead up to his trial on Monday 26 March. The victimisation of students is an attack on all of us still fighting the governments attacks on education.
Thus far the campaign has the support of NUS, UCU, CWU, PCS and a wide range of academics, MPs and public figures.

1) Sign the petition calling for an end to political sentencing and to drop the charges against Alfie Meadows. It can be found online here: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/justice-for-alife-meadows/
Over 1200 people have signed, signatories include Tariq Ali, John McDonnell (MP), Gigi Ibrahim (Egyptian Activist and Blogger), Liam Burns (NUS President), Ken Loach (Film Director), Jody McIntyre (Journalist and Equality Movement) and Zita Holbourne (BARAC and PCS NEC). Circulate the petition widely through all networks. You should also include links to the website www.defendtherighttoprotest.org and an email contact point: info@defendtherighttoprotest.org on any branch websites etc.
2) Create a facebook page which pledges your universities/colleges/schools UCU staff support for Alfie Meadows E.g. Sussex UCU Demands an End to Political Sentencing: Drop all Charges against Alfie Meadows.
3) Attend and publicize our Defend the Right to Protest Public Forum: Stand Up For Justice at Euston Friends Meeting House, Euston Road. Monday 5th March 7PM. Speakers include: John McDonnell (MP), Imran Khan (Campaigning Lawyer and Solicitor for Stephen Lawrence’s family), Alfie Meadows (Student Defendant), Liam Burns (NUS President), Marcia Rigg (Sean Rigg Justice and Change Campaign), Frank Fernie (Imprisoned protester, now free.) and Rob Evans (Guardian Journalist). Circulate and join the facebook event: http://www.facebook.com/#!/events/242723812474501/. You may also want to create your own event for a delegation.
4) Be part of supporting/organizing a delegation from your university/college/school to attend the demonstration outside Kingston Crown Court on Monday 26th March at 9AM, when Alfie Meadows will attend the first day of his trial. Please make your own Facebook event for a delegation of students and staff from your university.
5) Email all members of your UCU branch details of our campaign: the petition, public forum meeting and demonstration outside Kingston Crown Court. We will also send you hardcopies of publicity for all events. However please see the attached petition and flyers in the mean time.

Εξωθούν το Λαό σε δυναμικές πρωτοβουλίες ανατροπής

Η συμφωνία της ελληνικής τρόικας (ΠΑΣΟΚ – ΝΔ – ΛΑΟΣ) να εγκρίνουν και να φέρουν για ψήφιση στη βουλή τα νέα μέτρα (το νέο μνημόνιο) ουσιαστικά βάζουν ταφόπλακα και στην Εθνική μας υπόσταση ως κράτος καθώς και στην οποιαδήποτε ελπίδα έτρεφε ο Ελληνικός Λαός για το σταμάτημα του ευτελισμού και της παγκόσμιας προσβολής μας.

Πειθήνια όργανα, των τοκογλύφων και διεθνών εκβιαστών που ορέγονται τόσο μια φτηνή ελληνική εργασία όσο και το συνολικό πλούτο της χώρας, οι παράνομα κυβερνώντες σήμερα, παραδίδουν τα κλειδιά της Ελλάδας.

Ο Ελληνικός Λαός είναι περήφανος, είναι αξιοπρεπής και έχει αποδείξει ότι, όταν οι καιροί το απαιτούν είναι και πραγματικός αγωνιστής.

Γι ‘ αυτό η απάντηση του θα είναι ανάλογη του μεγέθους της προδοσίας που του επεφύλαξαν.
Θα τους ανατρέψει και θα τους αποδώσει τα πρέποντα.
Όλοι θα πρέπει να λογοδοτήσουν στο όνομα της Πατρίδας και του Ελληνικού Λαού.
Όλοι θα δώσουν δυναμικό και καταλυτικό παρόν έξω από τη βουλή τη μέρα που θα πρέπει να ψηφίσουν.
Αυτή τη ψηφοφορία δεν θα την επιτρέψει ο ίδιος ο Λαός.
Όσοι βουλευτές διαφωνούν καλούνται να πάρουν θέση στη πλατεία συντάγματος.
Ψηλά το κεφάλι.
Θα τους νικήσουμε.

ΕΡΩΤΗΣΗ

Προς τον κ. Υπουργό Υγείας και Κοινωνικής Αλληλεγγύης

ΘΕΜΑ: Εκτός νομιμότητας τα «μη οργανωμένα συσσίτια»;

Με την υπ’ Αριθ.Πρωτ. Υ1γ/Γ.Π/οίκ. 9420 εγκύκλιο του Γενικού Γραμματέα Δημόσιας Υγείας του Υπουργείου Υγείας και Κοινωνικής Αλληλεγγύης με θέμα «Παροχή συσσιτίων και τροφίμων – Αρωγή στις κοινωνικά ασθενέστερες ομάδες» δίδονται οδηγίες προς τις κατά τόπους υγειονομικές υπηρεσίες για τις παροχές συσσιτίων, που διενεργούνται σε όλη την χώρα από δήμους, ενορίες εκκλησιών και μη κερδοσκοπικούς οργανισμούς προκειμένου να διασφαλίζονται οι όροι υγιεινής. Σύμφωνα πάντα με την ίδια εγκύκλιο γίνεται διάκριση μεταξύ γευμάτων που παρέχονται από επιχειρήσεις του κλάδου της εστίασης, οι οποίες θα πρέπει να τηρούν τις υγειονομικές διατάξεις που προβλέπει ο νόμος και άλλων περιπτώσεων. Με βάση την εγκύκλιο όσοι ασχολούνται με την παρασκευή και την παροχή συσσιτίων θα πρέπει να ακολουθούν βασικούς κανόνες υγιεινής. Λογικά και χρήσιμα ακούγονται όλα αυτά.

Ωστόσο, προκαλεί εύλογα ερωτηματικά η ρητή γενική και αόριστη απαγόρευση παροχής «…μη οργανωμένου συσσιτίου από μη αρμόδιους φορείς» ενώ προβλέπεται στην εγκύκλιο η παροχή γευμάτων (συσσιτίου) η παρασκευή των οποίων δεν θα γίνεται από επιχειρήσεις του κλάδου της εστίασης και δίδονται οδηγίες τήρησης κανόνων υγιεινής.

Επειδή υπάρχουν πάρα πολλές κινήσεις πολιτών, δημοτικές παρατάξεις και άλλες εθελοντικές πρωτοβουλίες οι οποίες διοργανώνουν σε μόνιμη ή περιοδική βάση παροχή συσσιτίων για την υποστήριξη των συνανθρώπων μας και το έργο τους πρέπει να επαινεθεί και όχι να τεθεί υπό διωγμό

ερωτάται ο κ. Υπουργός

1. Με ποια κριτήρια ορίζονται οι «αρμόδιοι» για την παροχή οργανωμένου συσσιτίου φορείς;
2. Στοχεύει η εγκύκλιος αυτή στην απονομιμοποίηση του πολύπλευρου κινήματος αντίστασης και αλληλεγγύης που αναπτύσσεται σε όλη την Ελλάδα από κοινωνικές και πολιτικές δράσεις ενεργών πολιτών και κινημάτων με όπλο την αλληλεγγύη;
3. Νομιμοποιούνται οι διωκτικές αρχές με βάση το περιεχόμενο αυτής της εγκυκλίου να απαγορεύσουν την παροχή συσσιτίων αλληλεγγύης από δημοτικές κινήσεις, επιτροπές κατοίκων, εργατικά σωματεία και ομάδες ενεργών πολιτών και να διώκουν όσες και όσους αναπτύσσουν τέτοιες δράσεις;
